prussia1848-1871:

Bettina von Arnim (1785-1859)
The field I’m researching - mid-19th century Prussian politics - is so overwhelmingly dominated by rich old men that it’s nice to come across a female voice every now and again. More often than not, that voice belongs to Bettina von Arnim.
She knew everyone. The Brothers Grimm (she got them teaching jobs in Berlin after they were blacklisted), the authors Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Adele Schopenhauer, Clemens Brentano (her brother) and Karoline von Gunderröde, the early feminist, composer and democrat Johanna Kinkel, Karl Marx, the composers Mendelssohn, Brahms and Schumann… She even corresponded with King Friedrich Wilhelm IV on behalf of Berlin’s poor.
The list of her accomplishments is likewise pretty long. She wrote poetry and socially critical works such as Dies Buch gehört dem Konig (“This book belongs to the king”), which was banned in Bavaria. She published volumes of her correspondence with important figures of the age, and was also a singer, composer, and artist, and overall a leading light of the Romantic movement in Germany.
